Backcountry secerets holding great powder!

West Yellowstone got a few inches of new snow over the last couple days refreshing our backcountry. The best snow is in the trees and hidden out of the way areas. There is good powder to be found if you know where to look. The avalanche danger is still pretty high as we are battling a couple pesky layers that wont heal up. Use caution in avalanche terrain. Have a beacon, shovel, and probe, and know how to use it. Winter has arrived in West Yellowstone! Come out and get some cold smoke powder face shots of your own!!

Winter has been a little slow coming to the entire mountain west, but now with a good base set (5 feet) and 24″ of new snow over the last couple days West Yellowstone is finally in mid season form. We have been out riding the last couple days in conditions powder riders dream of. Face Shots of powder are every ware and even the best riders are finding spots to bury snowmobiles in powder. This latest storm dumped a heavy load on a weak snow pack, so hill climbing and travel through avalanche terrain is not suggested. Use extreme caution if you do enter these areas. Powder awaits you in West!!

Well its been a little bit of a slow start to the winter but mother nature has finally smiled down upon us. Over the last week riding conditions have gone from boney to epic. The last two days have brought over the hood powder, a welcomed site for those lucky enough to be here. With approximately four feet of snow in the mountains the base is now set and ready. Use extreme caution however, the avalanche danger is rated high and we have been seeing a lot of slide activity. As you can see from the pictures however, there isn’t much need for climbing, just getting around is challenge enough with this last snow. West Yellowstone is ready to ride!!!

Rapture Didnt Come So We Went Riding

I usually leave the posting up to the guides, but have a minute tonight so figured I would post for those of you that dont follow us on facebook. May 22, 2011 and while most of the riders have put their winter gear into storage and stored their sleds for the summer, HICOUNTRY and APG decided that winter is not over yet. Snow was good and there are still FEET. The Forrest Service cabin at Cabin Creek still looked like it did much of the winter. The powder maybe gone but the riding is not over.

For those of you who have put the snowmobile away for the season and have shifted your attention towards the boat or the 4-wheelers, STOP, you have made a huge mistake! This season in West has been one we will never forget as far as snow totals goes but apparently mother nature isn’t done with us yet. Over the last week SW Montana has continued to receive snow and the back country powder may be as good or better than any other point in the season. I was in one of our favorite spots (Gloryland for those in the know) yesterday and had perhaps the best day of riding yet, with snow over the hood and a great base that provided good traction, the lines and turnes that could be had were amazing! It looked much more like Janurary or February than the end of March. Ill leave ya with the thought in your head and a few pics to go with. Don’t trade the sleds for the boat yet, the riding is top notch in March, almost April now, and your buggy isn’t ready for Sta-bil and a cover just yet!

Unforgetable Riding Season!

Yet again this winter storms have come through West Yellowstone erasing any hint of existing tracks and wiping the slate clean, gifting us yet again with great powder riding! With snow still in the forecast for the near future the riding just continues to be stellar in SW Montana. Over the last few dry spells some small layers have formed that has increased our avalanche danger, as always, caution should be practiced when riding in avalanche terrain. However, if you haven’t been out west yet this year, or are looking to come out for the first time, this is the year to be here. An incredible base with fluffy cold smoke powder on top is how the book was written on backcountry snowmobiling. This season deserves an A as far as that goes. Come out and enjoy mother natures gift with us this year.

Bluebirds Baby!!

After a few weeks of riding in very limited visibility the sun decided to pay us a visit. It was nice to get out and have some great views to go along with some awesome riding. Although it’s been a little while since our last big snowfall we have been finding great conditions day in and day out in our favorite backcountry secret spots. I just spent two great days with some boys from Michigan and as you can see from the pictures it was great snow and unbelievable scenery. I hope to see you up here soon! -Clint Ace Powder Guides
