Cold Smoke powder blankets West!

Riders here in West Yellowstone have had a couple weeks of great backcountry riding with storms dumping light cold smoke powder at night and the skys clearing off during the day. The last couple days have been un-seasonably warm but with more snow in the forcast the outlook is good for a great month of February. The avalanche danger is still very high; we urge caution in the hills, and be prepared with all the proper avalanche gear.

Deep Powder has returned to West Yellowstone!

I have had the opportunity to ride with some great clients the last five days. And with good riders come some great pictures! The snow has been slow to come to West, but with a good base and new snow every night the last week, the Ace Powder Guides and those that ride with us are finding over the hood cold smoke powder. The avalanche danger is still high, so caution must be used around slopes that can slide. But with abundant powder easily accessable there is no need to hit the slopes. Ride safe, and remember, bridges freeze before roads.

Powder has arrived in West Yellowstone

Good riding as arrived in West Yellowstone! It came a little later than normal, and snow levels in town are still a little thin, but once one reaches 7,500 to 8,000 feet the light switch turns on and over the hood powder can be found in many areas around West. The base up high early in the winter was thin, but thanks to a couple nice storms the last week and a half most of the rocks and stumps are now burried by a couple feet of snow and only getting deeper. Come to West and enjoy one of the best snow packs in the country, however keep a close eyes on the slopes. Once again, thanks to an early snow in October, and then a long cold spell we have a burried layer of surface hoar. What this means is we have an unstable snow pack, yesterday in Cabin Cr. guides and clients observed where 4 different avalanches had ripped out and heard word of 2 snowmobilers setting off avalanches around Lions Head. Both riders were able to ride out of the slides, but it is a good example of how the weight of a snowmobile on the wrong slope can easily propigate a slide. Please have all of your avalanche gear, know how to use it, and avoid obvious avalanche terrain. Hi Country has packs for rent and we will give you instruction with the avalanche gear inside if you decide to ride the backcountry. Please ride safe and enjoy a late, but good start to our winter. Backcountry Shaping Up Nicely!

The backcountry around West Yellowstone is starting to take shape nicely. If you know where to go you can find more good turns than you can handle. Clint, Taylor, and some of the boys from Ace Powder Guides have been scouting some of our favorite riding areas and have been pleasantly surprised. Despite low snow levels in the town of West Yellowstone, once you gain some elevation the riding gets increasingly better. So the season is definitely starting to shape up and has the makings of some great conditions in the coming days and weeks. So it’s time to head west!

While most of the people in the mid west are already in spring mode and gearing up for Summer. In West we are still finding time and snow to do a little riding. While only snow banks are left in town, in the higher elevation we are still able to find good snow for riding. How often do you get to ride a snowmobile in May? Or ride and have to put on sunscreen because you are worried about burns? While the rental season may have ended, it dosent mean that the riding is over.

Boy just when we thought winter was over, Shaaa Boy! we get slammed with some of the best snow of the season. There was no way we could resist conditions like these so we headed out as soon as possible. Needless to say the amount of powder was more like early February than the first week of April. Powder was over the hood and most the time over the handlebars. Turns anywhere you wanted them, not to mention the fact that we had it all to ourselves. In one of the most popular backcountry areas we were the only tracks all day long. It was a shame we didn’t have more gas and more sunlight because it is definately a blank canvas out there. This ride definately ranked in the top 5 of the season for snow conditions, which is pretty impressive considering I can’t think of a day all winter that we didn’t find powder! Spring has definately come to West Yellowstone but there is still tons of amazing riding to be had out there.

Well, the title pretty much says it all. As we head into March the West Yellowstone area got slammed with a wonderful winter storm, dumping 20 inches or more in the high country. Anyone who says there is no snow out there needs to check out the above pictures. We’ve had two great days of endless powder and it’s only getting better out there. The past 48 hours has produced some of the best conditions of the season and I can tell you from first hand experience there is only one word to describe the current conditions, EPIC!

Well, it’s not Heaven but it’s about as close as you can get here on earth! As southwest Montana got hit with some fresh powder, guides Clint and Jeff took the boys to Glory Land, and as usual it was killer. Great weather combined with 1-2 feet of fresh snow in most areas made for an unforgettable day in the backcountry. Glenn from Oregon learned what true cold smoke is like and much preferred it to his usual riding in the Cascade Cement of the Northwest. The Pennsylvania boys also learned that short track sleds don’t quite cut it in the west and got a fair amount of practice on how to get a sled unstuck. Great times were had by all and we made it home without a drop of gas to spare. Thanks to everyone for a great day!

Elk Lake or Bust!

Another great day in the west! Although the weather has been less than cooperative the past few days there is still plenty of great riding to be had in southwest Montana. Elk Lake is one of the more unique trips offered by Ace Powder Guides. If you like to rip some trails and get plenty of good powder riding in the same day, Elk Lake never disappoints. The boys from Connecticut and I rolled out today and had a great day with good snow conditions and several moose sightings to top it all off. The views were epic today as is usually the case and we barely limped home with our fuel lights on. Thanks to Cliff and the boys for making it a great run today!

Glory land is a secret spot the Ace Powder Guides are permitted for outside of West Yellowstone. Along with some of the most incredable views anyware, Glory Land is almost always loaded with snow and has some of the most unique terrain anywhere! Wide open spaces and deep wind blown in snow makes for amazing riding most of the winter. Special thanks to the Preig’s, Eric, and Clint for making this one of the most memorable days of the winter.
